Burna Boy – ’20 10 20′

In ‘20 10 20‘ Nigerian Afrofusion artist Burna Boy (‘Monsters You Made‘) processes the police brutality that protesters faced at the Lekki toll gate on 20th of October (More: Amnesty International and CNN). Just like Falz (‘Johnny‘) he has been very outspoken in his criticism of the Nigerian Police. Pointing to the police shooting at the tollgate, Burna Boy directly addresses certain office holders and holds them accountable for the police brutality:

“Nothing you go talk wey go justify the case of thеir murder
The chief of staff, thе commander and the army wey carry order
Mr President, Mr Governor
Godfather, gbo gbo ijoba
All your atrocities
All of your corner corner
Make all the dead body disturb you for your dream”

In the lyrics he talks about the lacking opportunities for Nigerian youths, a theme which he also tackles in his song ‘Monsters You Made‘. He condemns the degree of kleptocracy in his home country, where graduates are only opportunities when they know certain ‘godfathers’:

“The money wey you thief yapa for your azza
You don turn our graduates to common beggars
All the book them go no matter
Cuz you no go get job if you no know godfather”

As stated by Burna Boy, the “proceeds of this song will be used to support families of victims and people suffering affliction as a result of the Lekki shootings. May the heavens open and celebrate all our fallen heroes who have died for this movement from the very beginning. Rest in peace to all the beautiful lives lost“.
