After the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody, Minneapolis rapper Dua Saleh released the angry and powerful track ‘Body Cast‘. The Psymun produced piece is about police brutality and was created a year ago, after Jamar Clark and Philando Castile were both shot dead by Police in St. Paul.
“Lately I had passed on mine
County ain’t on shit, they got bodies on the line
Lately I’ve been analyzing time
Y’all been dodging cameras like they bullets over crime”
Deeply shocked by the murder of George Floyd, the Sudanese American rapper released the track – not surprised of the constant relevance of its content: “‘body cast’ is a song that will pertain to and be relevant to our times as long as our cities and police departments are not held accountable for the murders that are going on within our communities.” (Local Current Blog).
The cover art illustrates names of all unarmed Black people that were killed by police in recent years.
The artist redirects all the revenue they receive from bandcamp sales to the organization Black Visions Collective (BLVC), a Minnesota based Black, Trans, and Queer led organization in affiliation with the Black Lives Matter Global Network. It is “dedicated to Black liberation and to collective liberation” and it currently advocates policy makers to defund the Minneapolis Police Department.
