Powerful spoken word about peace. ‘Our Guns don’t work‘ is the newest project from The NEST, ‘home of Nairobi’s alternative art thinkers’. NEST has made headlines last year by producing the wonderful project ‘Legacy‘, in which Kenyan artists recreated and re-imagined eight Kenyan pop songs.
‘Our Guns don’t work‘ follows another approach. The Mars Maasai-produced EP is all about spoken word and sharp Hip Hop verses embedded in Neo-jazz/soul melodies. It was created in response to a call to explore the theme ‘World Peace’ for the 2014 World Poetry Month. Whereas poets Awuor and Khenti gives us insides into their thoughts via spoken word, Trabolee and Qina provides us with Sheng Hip Hop and Neo-Jazz/Soul artist Jarel lends his beautiful voice to this excellent project.
The EP was recorded and mixed at the NEST in collaboration with the Beatmaking Lab (Nairobi). Watch below also a video, in which Awuor speaks about the context and inspiration for her performances on the project.
