I have recently somehow neglected the jazz genre on JUSI I LOVE, although there are many excellent African Jazz artists to discover and her is one of them: Christine Kamau is definitely one of the major African jazz artists that came to the limelight during the last years and, I’m sure, we will hear a lot about her in the future.
Christine Kamau is a Kenyan afro-jazz trumpeter/ composer, who started to study music theory and classical piano at the tender age of 11. At a later stage, she started learning to play the trumpet at the Kenya Conservatoire of Music and taught herself to play alto saxophone and trombone. South African jazz artists have been a great source of inspiration for Kamau, including Hugh Masekela, Jonas Gwangwa, Moses Khumalo, Ratau Mike Makhalemele and Moses Molelekwa.
In 2012, she released her widely celebrated debut album ‘This is for You‘, which contains eight self-composed easy-listening Jazz tracks, like ‘Conversations‘, ‘African People‘ or ‘This is for You‘ (inspired by Hugh Masekela’s hit ‘Grazing in the Grass‘).
