I have been working on this dream since more than a year now although the idea was roaming my mind for years. Last month I was able to realize this dream. I launched the online music label SAUTI YA FURAHA which promotes authentic African youth choir music. During different stays in African countries I was always amazed by the great energy with which youth choirs perform their songs. The name Sauti Ya Furaha derives from Swahili language and means ‘Voice of Happiness’ which illustrates the joy the young singers express through their gospel songs.
SAUTI YA FURAHA wants to give people worldwide the opportunity to listen to these gospels and likewise give young choirs the chance to record their songs and distribute them online. The label values the artistic talents and performances of the young artists very much and thus provides the choirs with 70% of the profit of their album sales.
So far SYF released two albums from Tanzanian Youth choirs: Machame Girls TYCS Choir and La Mennais Choir Moshi. Both choirs come from Moshi, which is situated at the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. All songs were recorded directly at the place where the youth choirs usually practice, which enables an authentic and exciting sound experience. The current recording tool that is used for these recordings is a Zoom H2N recorder. In January 2014 I plan to release an album by a Ghanaian choir. Burundian choirs will follow mid 2014.
Below you can listen to the LP ‘Pendo Langu‘ by Machame Girls TYCS Choir, which is purchasable via the SYF bandcamp store as digital download for 4 Euro. You can download the title track ‘Pendo Langu‘ (My love) here for FREE.
