‘The Gentlemen of Brazzaville’ – documentary by Gernot Ashoff

Gernot Aschoff, the director who made the wonderful video for Layori’s song ‘Dada, was involved in creating this documentary about one of the most exclusive clubs in the world: SAPE (Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes/Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People). ‘The Gentlemen of Brazzaville‘ deals about a subculture of young Congolese who drape themselves in elegant sharp attire. One of the most important aspects of the Sapteurs’ culture is music, which contributed to its spreading. The pictures are accompanied by brilliant regional sounds.

“Members have their own code of honour, codes of professional conduct and strict notions of morality. It is a world within a world within a city. Respected and admired in their communities, today’s sapeurs see themselves as artists. Each one has his own repertoire of gestures that distinguishes him from the others.” – In ‘Gentlemen of Bacongo’ written by Daniele Tamagni
