Indépendance Cha-Cha

52 years ago Democratic Republic of Congo gained its independence. One year afterwards, in 1960,  Joseph Kabasele wrote and sung the song “Indépendance Cha-Cha” together with his group African Jazz. Later Le Grand Kallé, as he was also known, would become one of the greatest musicians of Congolese music history.

Indépendance cha-cha. Tozoui,              “Here we are, independent at last,   
Oh! Kimpuanza cha cha, Tubakidi,            Long love Liberty, cha-cha,
Oh! Table Ronde cha cha, Tua gagné       Victory at the political roundtable,
Oh! Dipanda cha-cha, Tozui e e.                Long Live independence, We have won

50 years later the young Congolese musician Baloji, part of a new African generation of musicians, covered the song.
